Proficiency in Fire Fighting on PCTC, RO-RO & Ferries Course (FFPCTC)

The training focuses on the practical aspects of crew operations, including:

• prevention and early detection of fire hazards,
• fire safety control and maintenance,
• safe firefighting operations on the car deck,
• recognising the point at which the priority becomes saving lives, the ship and the cargo,
• determining the critical threshold beyond which the crew must withdraw,
• The training emphasises the decision-making process rather than rigid procedures.

Practical sessions are conducted at a specialist PCTC training facility, designed to faithfully replicate the conditions on board a ship, which include:

• a car deck equipped with a standard fire-extinguishing system installed on a PCTC,
• a superstructure, stairwell and escape routes,
• two high-capacity water intakes,
• lighting enabling training in both day and night modes,
• 1:1 scale models of electric vehicles, parked as they would be in reality.

It is aimed at a wide range of professionals working at sea and on land, as well as those planning a career in the fleet.

Officers:

• Management level – Captains and senior officers: managing firefighting operations on board the vessel and coordinating operational communications with land-based services, including maintaining constant contact with the shipowner’s office in emergency situations.
• Operational level – Deck officers: Operational command of the rescue team directly in the area where firefighting operations are taking place.

Rank-and-file crew (Deck department):

• Support level – Seamen forming a firefighting team operating in the fire suppression zone.

Shore and supervisory personnel:

• Supercargo, planners and stevedores: persons responsible for the precise arrangement of vehicles on the ship’s decks (taking fire safety into account).
