WORLD PREMIERE: Unique training for PCTC crews on a full-scale simulator – only at Inter Marine!

We are pleased to announce that IM Training, operating within the Inter Marine Group, has become the first training centre in the world to introduce a specialised full-scale simulator training programme focused on improving operational techniques and firefighting operations on PCTC vessels, Ro-Ro vessels and ferries.

In cooperation with our partners PSP “Florian” and Marlow Navigation Poland, we have developed a unique three-day training programme for PCTC crews, focused exclusively on real risks associated with electric vehicle fires. It has been prepared in strict accordance with IMO guidelines and the latest safety standards, confirmed by The Nautical Institute. The programme covers advanced procedures for car deck control, interpretation of data from measurement and monitoring systems, and the critical decision-making process — from saving the crew and protecting property to coordinating operations with the support of external assistance.

Why was the training for PCTC crews created?

The training was developed in response to the needs of the maritime transport services market. Our priority is to equip crews with the competencies required to act efficiently, but also wisely. One of the key elements of this knowledge is understanding when further action against a threat is no longer safe and begins to create additional risk. The crew must know not only how to act, but also when further action is no longer safe.

A key element of the course is practical training on a facility designed specifically for this programme. A realistically recreated car deck, filled with electric vehicle models, becomes a demanding operational environment.

The unique structure of the training facility allows for many different exercise scenarios. This enables us to adapt the simulation to specific situations, such as smoke density or fire intensity, preparing the crew for a wide range of possible events.

Training description

Due to the rapid growth in demand for electric vehicles, and consequently the increase in their transport by sea, maritime disasters caused by fires on PCTC vessels have become more frequent and more severe. The inability to extinguish a burning electric vehicle in maritime conditions requires the crew to respond properly, plan carefully and apply effective prevention measures.

In addition to theoretical classes, the programme includes exercises using a specially designed and built training facility. A PCTC car deck loaded with vehicle mock-ups fitted with batteries that explode becomes a real operational environment for course participants. When a fire is detected, automatic or remotely controlled firefighting systems are activated, and the crew joins the operation. The sailors’ task is to minimise losses, secure conventionally powered vehicles, maintain communication with the captain and determine the right moment to leave the car deck.

During the firefighting operation, the captain takes further actions, such as preparing for evacuation, directing the vessel to a safe location and, alternatively, accepting external assistance.

PCTC firefighting training is a breakthrough for seafarers

The dynamic development of the PCTC vessel market creates new competence-related challenges for crews. This course is a direct response to an educational gap, offering a programme closely aligned with the operational requirements of the most modern fleet transporting rolling cargo.

What makes our PCTC crew training unique?

  • Innovative programme: Developed by experienced practitioners, focused on the safe transport of vehicles, including electric vehicles, which is currently one of the key challenges in the industry.
  • Realistic training facility — Car Deck 1:1: We have unique infrastructure that faithfully recreates the car deck of a car carrier. Participants do not learn from manuals — they operate in a real space equipped with fixed firefighting systems.
  • Specialisation in EV fires: The programme focuses on lithium-ion battery fires in electric vehicles. This is currently one of the greatest challenges in shipping, and we teach crews how to control the rapid escalation of fire on garage decks.
  • Full-scale models of “exploding” vehicles: Our training facility includes 1:1 vehicle models that imitate chemical reactions and battery explosions, allowing the crew to experience the dynamics of a real threat.

Who is the training for?

The PCTC crew training at the Inter Marine centre is addressed to a wide group of specialists working at sea, as well as those planning a career in the car carrier fleet.

  • Officers

Management level – Captains and senior officers: Managing firefighting operations on board and coordinating operational communication with shore-based services, including maintaining constant contact with the shipowner’s office in crisis situations.

Operational level – Deck officers: Operational command of the rescue team directly in the area of the firefighting operation.

  • Ratings — Deck department

Support level – Seafarers forming the firefighting team operating in the fire zone.

  • Shore-based and supervisory personnel

Supercargoes, planners and stevedores: Personnel responsible for the precise arrangement of vehicles on board, taking fire safety into account.

Benefits for shipowners

  • Increased real safety levels on PCTC vessels,
  • Better preparation of crews for high-risk incidents,
  • Conscious and responsible decision-making in critical situations,
  • Reduced risk of total loss of the vessel and cargo,
  • Strengthened safety culture and compliance with the expectations of insurers and charterers.

Safety does not begin at the moment of fire — it begins in training!

We invite shipowners to take part in training that truly prepares crews for one of the greatest modern challenges in car carrier shipping.

Now you can obtain a certificate valued by the largest car carrier fleet shipowners in Gdynia!
