Course Objective:

To prepare crew members for effective and safe firefighting in the specific cargo spaces of PCTC (Pure Car and Truck Carrier), RO-RO vessels, and ferries. The course emphasizes the specifics of vehicle fires, including electric vehicles (EVs), as well as evacuation and smoke management in large, open cargo spaces. It is aimed at a wide range of maritime and onshore professionals, as well as those planning a career in the fleet.

  • Officers:
    • Management Level (Captains and Senior Officers): Managing firefighting operations on the vessel and coordinating operational communication with shore services, including constant contact with the shipowner’s office in crisis situations.
    • Operational Level (Deck Officers): Operational command of the rescue group directly in the area of the firefighting operation.
  • Crew on deck:
    • Support Level: Seafarers forming the firefighting squad operating in the fire zone.
  • Onshore and Supervisory Personnel:
      • Supercargoes, Planners, and Stevedores: Persons responsible for the precise positioning of vehicles on ship decks (taking fire safety into account).


Course Description:
The training focuses on practical aspects of crew performance, including:

  • Prevention and early recognition of fire hazards.
  • Control and maintenance of fire safety.
  • Safe conduct of firefighting operations on the car deck.
  • Recognizing the moment when saving lives, the ship, and the cargo becomes the priority.
  • Determining the critical limit of operations beyond which the crew must withdraw.
  • The training emphasizes the decision-making process rather than schematic procedures.

Practical exercises are conducted at a specialized PCTC training ground, designed to faithfully replicate real ship conditions, including:

  • A car deck equipped with a standard firefighting system installed on PCTCs.
  • Superstructure, staircase, and evacuation routes.
  • Two high-capacity water intakes.
  • Lighting enabling training in day and night modes.
  • 1:1 scale models of electric vehicles, parked as in reality.

Duration:
The course lasts 3 days and takes place at the Training Center in Gdańsk.

Prerequisites:

  • Firefighting training required for merchant ship crews.
  • Valid medical certificate.

Learning Outcomes (Participant acquires the following skills):

  • Increasing the actual safety level on PCTC, RO-RO, and Ferry,
  • Better preparation of crews for high-risk events.
  • Conscious and responsible decision-making in critical situations.
  • Reducing the risk of total loss of the ship and cargo.
  • Strengthening the safety culture and compliance with the expectations of insurers and charterers.

Certificate Validity:
The certificate is valid for 60 months (5 years).
